I have a 2007 Mazda CX7, Yesterday I got in my car to go to work and the check engine light came on, and the car is just chugging along. I've been told to change the spark plugs and air filter but wanted to check whether it could be anything else before I go and spend the small fortune that my spark plugs are going to cost me.

It could be a multitude of problems. You can probably try spark plugs and air filter (probably wouldn't hurt if you haven't changed them for a while), but you may still need to take it for service. Sometimes you can take it to an auto parts store (NAPA, O'Reilly, etc) or auto service center and they will check it with their computer.
