I have a 2008 Audi TT Roadster. My engine light came on and temperature gauge quit working
Changed the sensor, cleared the code, temperature gauge worked. Drove a little while, engine light came on again, temperature gauge quit about 5 minutes later.

Check your coolant level, if it's too low it won't come in to contact with the temperature sensor.
Then it's most likely a faulty thermostat.
