I have a 20kw generac standby generator, where the starter tries to engage after the generator starts up and is running. Only has 316 running hours. Installed new starter in 2016
The starter pinion drive gear is sticking.... its the smaller gear on the shaft that moves up and down to engage the flywheel gear and start the motor. Carefully put a LITTLE hi temp grease on the shift splines (curved ones) and see how much that helps. The gear is not staying "retracted"..if this doesn't help.. the spring that pushes the gear back down may not be strong enough...(you could always fix both)
Thanks Steve for your quick response, I'll give that a look-see, something simple I hope. I should have mentioned it tries to engage about every 10 seconds after the engine has started. Its not a contiueous contact sound, just a quick contact,a sparking, then repeat. Like its getting a signal to re-start?Thanks Steve for your quick response, I'll give that a look-see, something simple I hope.
