I have a 71 chevy truck with a 396 turbo 400 trans and it is not shifting into 2nd gear if I pull it down manually it goes in gear and slips very bad. The fluid is not burnt so I don't thank it is clutches any help would be much appreciated
It may still be clutches, bands, fluid pressure,or a bad torque converter.....there are rebuild and service books in librarysec629--maybe u should change fluid-may not be the rite type for that model--synthetic like amsoil is an option also--or havit testdriven by an xperiencd tech-ask him about transmission flushes-if he says yes then find another guy
Can you tell us how long it has been since the last time the transmission was serviced? How many miles? When was the last time the fluid was changed? If it has been a long while, it could be that the hydraulic circuits are gummed up. Did you check the function of the vacuum pod? If it is leaking, it can effect the performance. Also, carefully check the linkages for looseness and function. Good Luck.
