Could be a number of things, has the vehicle been serviced regulary ? , check condition of trans fluid, filter etc as a starting point , should be a bright cherry red colour, if looks dark brown and or smells burnt then change fluid and filter hopefully nothing more involved as could be very expensive , hope this helps
