I have a brand new connex 4800 dxl straight out of the box, I bought it 3 years a go and just took it out of the bx for the first time and installed it and when i turned it on it was working fine for 5 minutes and started smoking and the channel light whent out and now it want talk are here, what happen, I had 12 volts and a good ground. Sounds like you had a problem with the antenna set up or the corresponding connectors. If not done and checked right you will get an SWR through the roof. When the SWR is high the heat is returned back down the coax to the back of radio and right to the final transistor and smokes it.

Your radio being in a box for 3 years should not have really had any effect on its performance. There could have been some dust collect in there. You might have had the power turned up to high. Pop the covers off and see if anything is burnt. That's the first step.
