I have a brand new Jayco trailer with a gas Atwood hot water heater model 4-E, electronic ignitition. When I turn it on, the burner ignites for about 3 seconds and then turns off. It does so for 3 times and then it stops altogether. I know that the burner ignites because I saw blue flames coming out of the burner area. Any idea what it could be?
Water Heaters - RTO - Atwood DSI-RV Water Heater-6 Gallon
As much as you do not want to hear this.... the water heater is under warranty as is the Jayco Trailer. I would tell you 4 things to check but you would void your warranty. I strongly recommend you contact Jayco at 1 800-RVJAYCO. Always have the vehicle identification number when you call your dealer
Here is their policy:
Does Jayco have a roadside assistance plan? Yes, all Jayco recreation vehicles now come with one free year of Customer First roadside assistance provided by Coach Net, the largest RV emergency road service in the country. The Jayco exclusive 24-hour Customer First assistance benefits include:

I am willing to take the hit here in passing on sound advice. If you would contact your dealer and explain to them that the Atwood water heater has never worked. The original Atwood water heaters come with a 90 day warranty but... most parts of the water heater have a 2 year warranty that is honored through camping world product protection.
There is a 3 year warranty on the electronic circuit board from Dinosaur Atwood part number 91226 and Dinosaur P/N 14-12-20-7-7-E002 (printed on circuit board)
This is the owners manual for the hot water heater itself: (6 and 10 gallon)

One thing to note is that the water must be on and pressurized before the burner will light.
Atwood can be contacted here: MAINTENANCE AND CARE INSTRUCTIONS SERVICE CALLS & QUESTIONS Location and phone numbers of qualified Service Centers can be found at our website http:/www.atwoodmobile.com or call 574-262-2655 to have a Service Center List mailed.
Just one other thing to note as this describes your exact symptom:
GAS/ELECTRIC COMBINATION FUNCTION GAS OPERATION. When the gas switch is turned on, the unit will make three attempts to light. If for any reason there is no ignition, the unit will lockout and the red lockout lamp will illuminate. If the thermostat fails, the ECO will also lockout the unit, requiring resetting. Determine the reason for no ignition, correct it, and reset the gas ignition sequence by turning the switch off, then on.
I suspect that either there is something in the plumbing blocking either the gas or the water line or... a problem with the flame sensor. Again.. this should be warranty service as the unit is brand new.
