If the existing chain is worn-out so too will the gears be. Use a chain-checker or ruler to measure 'stretch'. If the chain is over 0.75% stretched you will need to replace the chain, cassette and chainrings (colectively known as the 'drivetrain'). This may prove un-economical so just put back on the old chain until the whole drivetrain is worn-out, then replace it. You will need a chain tool suitable for the number of gears the bike has (count cogs at the back only), ask in your local independent bike shop for help selecting the tool. Just realised that the Schwinn Meridian uses a single gear (possibly through a hub-gear mechanism?). This is usually pretty strong and you should be able to 'graft' in a new section of chain links, or simply use a joining link. You will need a chain tool suitable for your chain (single-speed) and possibly a joining link.Just realised that the Schwinn Meridian uses a single gear (possibly through a hub-gear mechanism?).
