I have a dish vip612 dvr which suddenly turned off and the cooling fan came on. I can't turn the unit on to do anything. If I shut off power and turn the power back on. the fan runs and the unit will not turn on. Is this a common problem?
You're likely either experiencing overheating or power cycling. Put the receiver into a well circulated area, and let it cool down. If this does not alleviate your problem you will need a replacement box. Be sure to set up insurance for your account before you ask for a new box to be sent.

There are two possibilities. One, the receiver is too hot or too cold. If the receiver is over 140 degrees or under 41 degrees Fahrenheit it will do this. Make sure it is not too crowded, has room above and beneath (I had to set books under the corners of mine to prevent this issue) for air to circulate, and that there is not too much dust and debris blocking the air vents, or fan exhaust. Also make sure that the receiver is not too close to an air vent or heater that could be overheating it. The problem should be gone as soon as the unit comes to the right temperature zone. Second, the unit may need to be replaced because a problem has occurred with its power. It could be a surge without a sufficient surge protector (not all power strips are surge protectors, and many surge protectors will continue to function after a surge and a reset.) or a fault within the unit. The only resolution is a new receiver, and all existing recordings are lost. Warning, a replacement receiver will be provided, but in the little itty bitty writing makes you responsible for a damaged receiver. They will test your receiver when it is sent back to them, and if it was a surge fault, or dust/debris accumulation inside the receiver they will charge you for the replacement, and a ViP 612 is about $199 (last I checked).
