I have a Fuji FinePix A340 digital camera (c. 6 years old). Camera stores say that they do not have memory cards small enough. My manual says the largest-memory card my camera can accommodate is DPC-512 (512 mb). Is such a card available anywhere for purchase?

Bought a 1GB card (XD) for mine at a local drugstore and it works just fine after updating the firmware. Had trouble with the online stuff, so took it to Fuji in Missauga, Ontario (almost next door for me) for updating. Cost was $15.
You can buy small memory cards at amazon.com Also, there is a firmware update for your camera available at the support section of the Fuji website.
