I have a gateway PC133 Pentium 3 512ram (but there is additional 256 installed it cannot support ) and it's 797mhz. Running windows XP. It has been very very slow and windows adjusts the virtual storage paging file size automatically. Disk drives sound like they are always running. Can I upgrade this machine to speed it up? How? New motherboard?

I was called by my service provider (cable company) and told I had an active bot on my system. Even though I have been running AGV free scanning software. I finally found a number of them using spybot (also free). The system runs better, but is still slower than before. I have observed AGV using tons of resources, and will re-think this one!
Thanks for the help. I have adjusted appearances as suggested and that helps too. I think I will soon attempt a rebuild of his system, (format drive and reload windows and eveything else). If it doesn't improve I will consider a new system. (This one is 8 years old after all and I don't want to keep investing cash in it.)
Thanks again!
Hello,
You really do need to change the motherboard.
What I would advise you to do is to upgrade your
RAM.
Change it to 1GIG Ram instead, then after installing
it, try defragment your PC (Very Important).
And Also get a very good Antivirus, I always prefer
Avast, which you can easily download from their
website, and it is also very light, as compared to
McAfee, Norton, e.t.c.
All these things are going to take you a lot of time to
finish but I'll tell you the truth...they are worth it.
After all these, you can now optionally improve the
performance of your system by going to this place :
Right-Click on my computer, Properties, then Click
on Advanced, then under the performance tab, click
on settings, and select 'adjust for best performance'.
This will change the appearance of your system and
significantly increase your system speed.
Hope this gives you a great solution.
Goodluck!
