I have a Harman Kardon 7.1 surround system and currently only using analogue cables to connect to the speakers, I was away for the weekend and when I came back there is no sound from the speakers, I have power to the amplifier but on the digital display it doesn't deem to recognize the speakers are there, also when i came back the batteries in the remote were in the wrong way, I'm not sure if that has anything to do with it, please help
Do you have a poltergeist turning the batteries around on your remote, or did someone play around with the receiver and its settings while you weren't around?
If the receiver doesn't recognize the speakers (what brand/model, just in case this turns into a hairball?), I'd crack the manual and go through the entire speaker definition and setup.
BTW: conventional speakers only use analogue cables. Why was that worth mentioning?
Brand and MODEL of the speakers? If you bought them as part of a home cinema are they compatible with THIS receiver? Better yet, sometimes Fixya forces you to choose a model that isn't exactly right. Can we believe the receiver is Harman Kardon AVR 235?
So, the remote WAS handled by someone other than you. Human error frequently precedes sudden disfunction of something. I still suspect a setting got changed.

In the rare case in which the unit’s operation or the displays
seem abnormal, the cause may involve the erratic
operation of the system’s memory or microprocessor.
To correct this problem, first unplug the unit from the
AC wall outlet and wait at least three minutes. After the
pause, reconnect the AC power cord and check the
unit’s operation. If the system still malfunctions, a system
reset may clear the problem.

The unit will turn on automatically. NOTE: Resetting the processor will erase any configuration settings you have made for speakers, output levels, surround modes and digital input assignments, as well as the tuner presets. The unit will be returned to the factory presets, and all settings for these items must be reentered. If the system is still operating incorrectly, there may have been an electronic discharge or severe AC line interference that has corrupted the memory or microprocessor. If these steps do not solve the problem, consult an authorized Harman Kardon service center.
