I have a macbook pro and when i plug in my 500gn WD external hard drive into the usb port i get a message saying "the disk you inserted is unreadable". the hard drive unit light comes on and i hear it spinning but it doesnt show up on the desktop and the message I mentioned is displayed. whats the solution??

If the drive is brand new, then it is likely that it needs to be formatted. If it is an old drive you have used before, then it is highly likely that the drive has failed. I suggest you format the drive and see if that helps.
