I have a maxtor 120GB external hard drive but no power supply. How do I get a replacement? I tried a switchable power adapter from a local hardware shop and although I set the voltage to 12v it lights up but does not power the drive

The problem you are having is the adaptor you tried is the right voltage but not the correct ampage. You require a 12v dc adapter with a rating of at least 1-Amp. The switchable supply you purchased would be well under the required level, probably 400ma (milli-amp), in other words about half the needed amount. A cable modem power adapter would be sufficiant. If you have one, make sure it is the correct voltage and polarity, positive pole (+) usually the inner pin on the end of the connector. Hope this is of some help to you.
