I have a pair of Peavey Hysis 2 speakers. At a gig on Saturday night one of the started crackling when loud vocals went through. I set them up in the garage next day and the cab that had been crackling was less clear and muddier sounding than the other one. There was definitely sound coming from the driver and the horn though

You have likely almost but not totally fried a voice coil in your speaker. Most speakers get cooked from underpowering, not from being overdriven. What are the speakers rated for and what are you driving them with?
