I have a single lever bathtub control for hot and cold water, but cannot get shower activated. Only have the up and down lever to open and close tub. What am I missing? I am in a new rental and the landlord is not quite sure either. I need help

The lever that you are moving controls a water diverter in the pipe. It may be broken and need replacement. I'd ask your landlord to call a plumber. Good luck!
