I doubt there is much retro about the internal workings and expect they will be fairly standard.
If the mechanism operates with a good spring pressure when power is switched off - press down to the full depth and ensure it returns with enough strength to lift a couple of bread doorsteps with the usual amount of vigour.
If this is the situation without being switched on you can be confident the main mechanism is fine and the problem is possibly electronic. If toasting takes the usual length of time and then toasting stops but doesn't popup either the little solenoid that holds the mechanism down during toasting is stuck or it is remaining energised due to an electronic fault...
