I have a Smith Corona Portable Electric, which I bought in new in 1957 - 1960. I found it a few weeks ago in going thru my stuff. I took it out and turned it on. The motor ran, but with an odd cllicking sound. So I immediately turned it off, and put it away. A few days ago I brought it out , but this time nothing happened when I turned it on. So I removed the outer panels, blew it out (there was very little to blow). Everything inside looked virtually new - even the belts and cable, but the switch or motor do not do anything. Is this a common fault, and if so, is the repair expensive. I love that old box, and now would actually use it at times (ie., for labels and envelopes) Thanks very much Russel A. Staffen
MOST LIKELY THE BRUSHES NEEDS TI BE CLEANED INSIDE THE MOTOR AS WELL AS THE COMMUTATOR WHICH THE BRUSHES RIDES ON. THE PATINA ON THE COPPER PARTS HAVE A FILM WHICH NEEDS TO BE CLEANED OFF WITH EMERY PAPER TO PROVIDE AN ELECTRICAL CONTACT
