I have a Swingline 270 & the staples come out flat. It does not staple. I cannot find anything in the way to cause it from bending the staple as it comes out

Yup anvil in wrong position is correct for an old question that doesnt matter anymore
The bottom plate directs the two staple tips to begin their inward travel to bend inward. Examine the two tracks in the bottom plate with magnifying glass to see if there is damage or foreign material to impede the inward travel.
