9 out of 10 times this error is caused by the print head assembly binding up on the platen (the metal bar that the print head moves back and forth on). Remove the ribbon and paper from the printer. Wrap a thin cloth or Kimwipe around the platen and spay some WD-40 on the cloth. Work the cloth back and forth on the platen to clean it. Then with the platen still damp with WD-40 work the print head assembly from side to side, this will clean out the inside of the print head assembly. Clean the platen one more time. I have seen this problem caused by two other things, a defective ribbon casette or worn out drive gears.
