I have a toshiba portege m200 with windows xp pro service pak 3 . I have encountered the hang at driver agp 440 sys and cannot boot even in safe mode. At "Silverdragons" expert recommendation (much appreciated) I took the hard drive and connected to IDE-usb 2.0 connector but the original hard drive makes a clicking noise and is not recognizable on the new computer. Is hard drive dead or is there another step I can take?

The SP3 has caused all kinds of errors and needs to be removed by rolling it back, but in your case your are locked out. Here's a trick i used many times to save my programs. On fresh XP install page (going from memory) pick choose another folder. **Do NOT allow it to get to the format stage, in case you make an error here, go back. If all this fails then it sounds like your HDD may be kaput. In that case try and slave the old one to the new to get all your programs off it.(should be able to drag em over)
