I have a Uniden 76xl. It was putting out about 7 watts and I added a rfx 75 kit. I used the CBTricks.com instructions for 78 series radios, to the letter. The radio was stock and everything was intact before the install. Now, D8 smokes after about 2 seconds of the radio being turned on

D8 is a polarity protection diode. you have hooked something up incorrectly. I would go over what you have done, and do not try using the radio until you fix it. If you haven't already, you are going to have to replace D8.
