I have a western digital essential 1 TB external hard drive.I have windows vista and it has usually worked fine until one day i tried to plug it into a different computer that has window's 7, but it malfunctioned. The windows 7 computer kept repeatedly asking if i wanted to format the drive and like 20 windows asking that same questioned kept coming up and the computer refused to respond to my answers, so i just unplugged the drive. When I plugged it back into my windows vista computer it did not show up at first. after several tries of reboots, unplugging everything and replugging everything in windows said it could not read the "usb device" and that i should either re-plug it in or replace the device. I've tried reconnecting it but now it doesn't show up at all. The drive still lights up and makes noise like it is working fine but my computer does not see it. All my music and pictures and videos are on this hard drive! please can someone help?

HI, RULE #1 IS "ALWAYS" ATTACH/PLUGIN WHILE PC IS SHUT-DOWN. NEVER CONNECT/DISCONNECT WHILE RUNNING. GO TO CONTROL PANEL, DEVICE MANAGER, SCROLL TO BOTTOM, CLICK + WD DRIVE MANAGEMENT DEVICES, SEE IF WD SES DEVICES IS THERE IF IT IS, DOUBLE CLICK IT. A WINDOW SHOULD POP-UP SEE IF IT SAY'S THIS DEVICE IS WORKING PROPERLY. IF NO DRIVERS ARE INSTALLED, CLICK UPDATE DRIVER. IF THAT DOES NOT WORK, GO TO CONTROL PANEL, ADMINISTRATIVE TOOLS, COMPUTER MANAGEMENT, UNDER STORAGE, CLICK DISK MANAGEMENT, MAXIMIZE PAGE, SEE IF MY BOOK IS THERE. IF IT IS, RIGHT CLICK, THEN MARK PARTITION AS ACTIVE...........I HOPE THIS HELPS..........JEFFXC
