Initially, to my understanding, Epson does not recommend ink pad replacement by users without technical training or resetting the Ink Pad Counter without replacing the ink pads. Additionally, it is a very messy job.
Offhand, the information on "...how to clean the waste ink pads rather than replace them..." from tradebit is: wash the ink pads. The hitch is your original question, "...how do I remove...waste ink pad...". As initially stated messy. Further, it requires removing practically most of the mechanical parts of the printer to expose the flooring where the ink pads are. There are several ink pads.
Alternatives to removing, cleaning, replacing:
bypass the warning; i.e. reset without even replacing/cleaning the waste pad by pushing the Power, Maintenance (next to the power) and Stop buttons simultaneously. Maintain press for at least 10 seconds or more. Power OFF, unplug and allow un-powered condition for a few minutes. Restart and this will reset the internal waste ink counter;
bypass the warning; i.e. reset without even replacing/cleaning the waste pad by downloading and installing SSC Service Utility from here. Instructions for its use maybe viewed here. Should you be interested background information maybe read here;
install an external waste ink collector. Instructions here, video tutorial here.
I can't find any on-line documentation about the waste ink pad, so I'm doubting it is considered a user serviceable item. You can email Epson here: http://www.epson.com/cgi-bin/Store/support/supDetail.jsp?BV_UseBVCookie=yes&category=Products&infoType=Contact&oid=26322&prodoid=37368458 and see if you can get a better answer.
The Paypal Function of that site that allows an instant download appears to work, but since I have no need for it I'm not going to process an order to buy it.
I'm concerned that the value of the kit 14.5 Quid might exceed it's performance (4 ratings of 2 star average and the ratings themselves are not posted makes me cautious) and you can get a replacement R285 for less than 70.
Personally, when an ink-jet printer gets to the point that it is needing maintenance above and beyond standard user maintenance, my recommendation is to dispose of it and get a replacement. If you have a need for color printing volume that exceeds the normal wear and tear of an ink-jet, you might look into a color laser printer. (My financial advisor was using 2 to 3 ink cartridges a week, I showed him how investing in a color laser printer with a 5 year advance exchange warranty paid for itself in 90 days.)
