I have an external hard drive which i have just used to back-up my dying home computer. I have continued to work with the files on this external drive waiting until I buy my new computer (which is taking me more time that I anticipated. So the short of it is that the back-up files are now the original files. Unfortunately in a brilliant application of Murphy's Law the power cable for the HD has broken -- specifically the round connector that plugs into the HD has somehow broken (it appers that one of the contact pins is either bent or broken making it impossible to access the HD. Do you have any advice about what I can do? Can I buy a replacement power cord somewhere?

Get out a magnifying glass and examine the pins. if it is bent use a pen after you have taken out the ink portion. try to use the opening of the pen on the pin and gently and i stress gently straighten it out. if it is broken the only other option would be to get a replacement power adaptor. usually you can pick them up inexpensively on ebay, but if it is broken please advise me and i'll assist you in finding one. do NOT plug in any adaptor thinking it might work if it is not an exact replacement or you will have more then murphy's law problems.
abit late now but a motto i live by is that if you don't have at least three backups of a file... it wasn't really all that important to you
