I have hooked this up with my laptop to back up my system and the drive is not linking with a laptop that it has manytimes before and is now making a clicking noise like something is catching. This is the second unit, the first lasted 2 weeks with the same problem, this one is a replacement and is only 14 months at most old. Can you assist please

If the drive is making noise, that means the drive is physically malfunctioning. It is possible that your laptop is causing a short in the units. However if you use usb ports often with no other issues, then it is probably just the drives being defective.
