I have lines that appear on the monitor that started as a speck, then a line and now it appears extending from the bottom of the screen to the top. What is the cause of this and how can it be corrected?

Well, I have a 24 in Gateway. I unplugged everything from the screen, held the power button for 30 seconds, and plug everything back in. It worked again, apparently the problem was caused by a build up of static electricity and pushing the power button cleared out the static. Hope this helps.
