I have run out of black ink but only need to scan something onto my coputer - it has E-02 showing on the screen - is there any way I can scan without replacing ink??

Depending on which operating system you are using, you may need to tweek this, but for XP:
Start
Control Panel
Scanners
Select the scanner, and follow the wizard instructions.
This should even work with no cartridge in the printer (I just tried!!)
