I have sound, but the screen has just gone all black except for a quarter inch, horizontal white line in the center of the screen. The television is approximately six years old
The vertical circuit has failed. This can be as simple as por connections at the vertical IC or a defective IC. The IC will cost between $15-$25 and is easily replaced. There are often capacitors in the same circuit that may require replacement as well. Once the IC has been dealt with, the symptoms should change if the picture is not 100% correct.
The vertical IC should be a small flat IC attached to a metal heat sink with about 9-11 pins. It will be marked LA7837 or something similar. Try resoldering the pins on the IC first. If that fails to resolve the problem, replace the IC.
