On a vhs tape the TV is what needs to pick up the closed captions, now if it where DVD you can turn those on and that is called sub titles. All your closed captioned stuff is written on the tape and the TV picks that signal up from the VHS signal not the unit. So you might be a little confused on where the actual signal is processed is all. you need to go into your tv menu and set that.
