I have the PR240 2 way and no matter how many times I change and add new batteries it always acts the same: When I power on, it keeps scanning and the "mode" button does not work. Also and more importantly, the only way I can power OFF is by taking out the batteries. Do I have a faulty unit?

Did you spill something on your unit ? or did it get wet ?
If so try cleaning the keyboard contact area, this will solve your problem if it was contaminated and one of the keyboard switches is active due to contamination.
