I have tried all the suggestions regarding warm sync, hot sync etc., but I can NOT get past the screen where you "tap" the target. I've tried holding the power button in for a full 30 secs and that didn't help either. Any suggestions ?

Are you trying to sync the PDA to the computer? If yes, the first thing that you need to make sure is the hot sync software should be properly installed in your computer.
The PDA will not respond if the sync software is not working correctly. Try to uninstall and reinstall the sync software. And try again.
