I have uninstalled and reinstalled many times per iolo instructions and still get this message "the component"iolo system service" is required for system mechanic to operate properly and could not be started" Even trying to install ioloFirewall alone brings the same message

These problem usually occur when you are using a trial versions that have expired or a "half-cracked" version of a software. In order to reinstall the program you have to do some Registry editing. If you are a "novice" don't try to edit the registry, any errors you may make might render your system unbootable. (Do at your own risk)
Alternatively you can use a commercial uninstaller like 'final installer' or 'perfect uninstaller', etc...an many more in the market. Reinstall the program and use the uninstallers to remove the program and its remnats from the registry.
Probably you could try the "system restore" method set your OS back to the point before you install the software ie if you have set a restore point before you install do any new software installation as a precautionary measure just in case the installation might rendered your OS a bit erratic.
Please do a "chkdsk /f /r" from the CMD command just to eliminate any errors on the HDD.
