I just had directv hooked up, I have a dvr receiver, I was told I did not have enough hook ups on the back of my tv, so therefore, I went and bought a switch or combiner. Now, how do I need to run the cables to the switch and also hook up my dvd player. Right now the directv is all that is hooked up to the tv. Help

Newer directv hd receivers must connect to the av input (yellow,red, white) connections on the back/front/side of your tv. If your tv only has one of these av inputs then you will need an RF modulator for your dvd player. You will connect the (yellow,red, white) connections from the dvd player to the rf modulator and then connect the tv out on the rf modulator to the tv rf jack ( the silver threaded barrel on the back of the tv) Tune your tv to channel 3 to watch a dvd and then back to the av input channel for the directv receiver.
If you bought a component switcher, you should just have to run all of your inputs from your DirecTv and DVD into the input side of your switcher, then use on set of cables to connect it to your t.v. If that isn't the solution you needed let me know what part you bought to combine them and I'll see if I can give you more specific information.
Hook the output of the switch to your tv then run your cables from your dvr to one input of the switch then run wires from the dvd player to another input on the switch then you switch between the two whenever you want to use either one
