I just purchaed a hamilton beach 20 cup rice cooker and the instructions say "carefully place cooking pot straight down on base.make sure cooking pot is securely seated by rotating the pot left and right". I cannot figure out how to secure it ... the cookin pot just floats on the heating element, which seems to be on a spring

the secure that is being referred to is that you should carefully seat the cooking pot and do not allow is fall on the floor/ground.
There is nothing to worry about, provided the pot it is well seated on the cooking element.
