I misplaced my Dodge Nitro key. The dealer wants
I misplaced my Dodge Nitro key. The dealer wants to charge $230 to get me a new one. I found out that I could program a blank key with instructions in the owners manual. Has anyone had luck with that?

What is needed is a qualified locksmith that is background-checked, as can be found on a free resource provided by the Associated Locksmiths of America ( A.L.O.A. ) at www.findalocksmith.com/search.aspx One can also check NASTF, http://nastf.org/i4a/pages/index.cfm?pageid=3532 which is the go-between for the aftermarket auto service industry and the auto makers. NASTF, via Associated Locksmiths of America, vets locksmiths with a FURTHER background check system, to be pre-qualified to access car manufacturers SECURITY PROTOCOLS. This special access, along with correct scan tools to read the pin number from the vehicles' computer, and to program the keys is all that is needed.
Locksmiths can also provide the following unique services:
1. Keys when the VIN will not reveal any info, such as salvage titled, former rental or other fleet vehicles and cars where the locks were changed and factory info and pin may be WRONG. Older vehicles where manufacturer does not HAVE the info, Locksmiths can bypass the VIN requirement of other auto repair facilities.
2. Immobilizer reset, to clear all stolen or missing or CLONED keys. This requires special attention and procedures.
3. Weekends/Holidays/Eves. Locksmiths can generally do this ON-SITE... even third basement level of a parking garage.
4. ON SITE programming of replacement keys. You CHOOSE if you want to tow vehicle or not. Weekends? Many professional locksmiths offer 7 day service. No need to tow it to a back lot, where it waits for following week to be serviced.
5. More key/remote options. Choose remote-head key OR key only without a remote, it is YOUR choice ( unless there is the rare incidence of no manufactured option for a key-only without the remote )
6. Locksmiths also can tend to the need for lock service, replacement and keying to match the rest of the car.
So you DO have a choice!
The Customer Learn programming method procedures are as follows:
1. Obtain the blank Sentry Key(s) that are to be programmed as valid keys for the vehicle. Cut the blank key(s) to match the ignition switch lock cylinder mechanical key codes.
2. Insert one of the two valid Sentry Keys into the ignition switch and turn the ignition switch to the ON position.
3. After the ignition switch has been in the ON position for longer than 3 seconds, but no more than 15 seconds, cycle the ignition switch back to the OFF position. Replace the first valid Sentry Key in the ignition switch lock cylinder with the second valid Sentry Key and turn the ignition switch back to the ON position. The second valid Sentry Key must be inserted in the lock cylinder within 15 seconds of removing the first valid key.
4. About 10 seconds after the completion of Step #3 , the security indicator in the instrument cluster will start to flash and a single audible chime will sound to indicate that the system has entered the Customer Learn programming mode.
5. Within 60 seconds of entering the Customer Learn programming mode, turn the ignition switch to the OFF position, replace the valid Sentry Key with a blank Sentry Key transponder, and turn the ignition switch back to the ON position.
6. About 10 seconds after the completion of Step #5 , a single audible chime will sound and the security indicator will stop flashing, stay ON solid for 3 seconds, then turn OFF to indicate that the blank Sentry Key has been successfully programmed. The SKIS will immediately exit the Customer Learn programming mode. After the ignition is cycled the vehicle may be started using the newly programmed valid Sentry Key.
Each of these steps must be repeated and completed in their entirety for each additional Sentry Key that is to be programmed. If the above steps are not completed in the given sequence, or within the allotted time, the SKIS will exit the Customer Learn programming mode and the programming will be unsuccessful. The SKREEM will also automatically exit the Customer Learn programming mode if it sees a non-blank Sentry Key transponder when it should see a blank, if it has already programmed 8 valid Sentry Keys, or if the ignition switch is turned to the OFF position for more than about 50 seconds.
What if you've lost the only valid key available? Is programming a blank still an option?
Programming a FRESH key with the correct chip type can be programmed in by a locksmith, even if all keys are gone. See above for my more in-depth explanation of the options, and where to FIND a qualified and TRUSTED locksmith.
We also suggest being careful of trying to buy keys by VIN over the web. There are thousands of fake ads online, that LOOK real enough, and may exist only to get your vin and key info, and address of your vehicle.
Due diligence is ESSENTIAL, as the phone books and search engines are NOT looking out for you.
The good guys ARE in your corner, you just need to know how to find us.
No go to the dealer it just pays to do something like that right
