I originally did this as a work around for what turned out to definitely be a faulty HDMI card in the reciever and it worked well, you need to go(on the PS3) Settings then scroll down to Display Settings and walk through the setup to change resolution. These excellent recievers unfortunately have a habit of cooking themselves slowly but Onkyo were kind enough to have a standard "2 year" warranty and when I finally contacted the reseller was simply asked to drop it back and they will call when its mended and back, it took 6 days!! I was so chuffed, especially when I discovered that Onkyo won't let retailers perform warranty repairs and make them send all units back to an official Onkyo repairer. The work is perfect and the reciever is like new, as far as I can tell they changed the HDMI daughter card and re-flashed the firmware and so far no issues. I would however recommend NOT covering the top of the reciever at all to allow heat to dissipate

It's in the manual of nearly every piece of audio electronics to ensure adequate ventilation.
http://www.retrevo.com/support/Onkyo-TX-SR606-Receivers-manual/id/16690ag612/t/2/
"7. Do not block any ventilation openings. Install in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions."
"18. If you install the apparatus in a built-in installation, such as a bookcase or rack, ensure that there is adequate
ventilation. Leave 20 cm (8") of free space at the top and sides and 10 cm (4") at the rear. The rear edge of the shelf
or board above the apparatus shall be set 10 cm (4") away from the rear panel or wall, creating a flue-like gap for warm air to escape."
But who actually reads the manual?
