I purchased an 8gig sd card and tried to put it in the digimax 53 camera but after trying to format the card it continues to tell me to check the sd card.

The camera only supports SD memory (limit 2GB), not SDHC (4GB and more). The manual claims up to 1GB guaranteed, though the camera recognizes my 2GB card card.
You may need an SDHD card, not the SD
