I purchased a radsportz kayak hoist which appears to be a sturdy, high quality product. The instructions say to position the two pullies no less than 6 feet 8 inches apart, but I need the hoist for a short kayak (less than ten feet long) in a small garage, and would prefer to place the pullies closer together than 6 feet 8 inches. Can I do this? If so, how much less? What will be the consequence? Look forward to hearing from you

You should be fine to go shorter. The reason for the 6-8 foot recommendation is balance. a 12-14 foot kayak would risk tipping it you had a 4-foot width and didn't denter it just right. Your shorter kayak should do fine at 4 ft, but I would be careful to center.
