I put a BYTECC BT-PSATA esata controller on an old dell desktop system, and it installed fine, looks like a VIA RAID Controller - 3249 to device manager. But when I attach a 500G external drive to the card, the system hangs completely - mouse won't even move - when I detach the disk from the controller, the system wakres up again. If I try to boot with the disk attached, the boot hangs when XP is trying to load - again, take the disk off and things wake up

Hello,
its either the external hard drive case (or hard drive itself) is defective or the hard drive is too large for your computer. What's the configuration of your computer, I mean, Ram size and Processor size?
If the external hard drive is too large for the computer, it can cause the computer to freeze/hang.
You can connect the external hard drive to another computer or laptop and observe if it will do the same. This will reveal if the problem is from the external hard drive or computer.
Good luck.
HI,
Since you have not heard that large drive can make a old desktop size, then you are hearing it for the first time. I'm saying this out of experience.
Hard drive capacity has to be equal to the size of RAM and processor of a computer. This is why you see that modern computers has about 2G to 3G of RAM and double processor of about 2000+ on each processor.
Pentium III 748Mhz, 768MB is to small for 500GB.
Try upgrading your RAM, it might help a bit.
Good luck.
