On the bottom of the carburetor bowl there is a wire, use a test light to see if there is current there when key is turned to the on position and also the start position, It should have. This solenoid shuts off the gasoline to the main jet. If you placed your ear up close to it and cycled the key off and on you should hear a click sound.
If the engine ran while you were spraying starter, the it may be that the carburetor needs some cleaning. Start by cleaning the bottom canister where the floating valve is. Visually check the jet-holes to make sure they are cleared.
