I ran out of gas in my 08 yaris and still had 3 bars. I put in 4 gallons and I'm still at 3 bars. What happened that the bars aren't moving up with the extra gas?

This problem usually occurs due three reasons: 1. If the odometer is reversed. (In this case the speed is not read. if meter reads speed ignore this reason). 2. The pointer in the sender fuel gauge is carbon fouled. (Remove the fuel gauge from the fuel tank and just clean the pointer. The fuel gauge is located under the rear passenger seat). 3. The fuel gauge in the fuel tank is defective.(Replace with a good known one even purchased from the junk). Hope that works.Thank you for visiting Fixya.
