You need to find out what the fuel pressure is you may have to replace the fuel pump one of my kids car was doing the same thing and i just put a fuel pump in it sunday (smile i told her the same thing stop running the car low on fuel) give these websites a try
Check the fuel pressure with a gauge. Also check to make sure the gas tank is not building up vacuum. See if leaking the cap loose helps? Change the fuel filter. If pressure too low, probably pump. If too high, then pressure regulator. Running out of gas is not good for the fuel pump, but it should not be that delicate.
There are several different engines and fuel systems depending on year and where the Sportage intended market was.
But most are electronic fuel injected, so the filter is just before the fuel pump, in back, under the gas tank. On some it appear it attaches to the fuel pump. On some it appears to be in front of the gas tank. So you will probably have to jack it up, take off wheel, and use a jackstand for safety.
You might also want to have a pan to catch the inevitable gas you are going to lose, and don't let it drip on a drop light or anything that could ignite it.
Shake out the filter after removal. If you see lots of water or rust, you may want to flush out the tank or use an alcohol drier to soak up any water. Many gas stations have water problems and can cause this. The more popular stations tend to accumulate less water. There are several different engines and fuel systems depending on year and where the Sportage intended market was.
