I think camera was possibly exposed to either a high temp. or humidity as it was left in an auto for extended period, before which time, (lightly-used) camera was functioning perfectly. If my suspicion is correct, do you service such problems and what's your opinion as to whether it might be cost effective. Certainly you couldn't provide quote but perhaps a range? Thanks
Cameras - Nikon - COOLPIX - Coolpix 5400 Digital Camera

As to any opinion regarding repair costs, you haven't actually said what's wrong yet so it's impossible to say. But given that it is now about six years old it's already reached the end of it's minimum design lifespan, all but the simplest of repairs will not be economically viable.
Digital cameras just don't last as long as their 35mm film predecessors; yours may be on borrowed time anyway as it's fitted with the infamous Sony five megapixel sensor. Huge numbers of these failed prematurely due to a manufacturing error and were subject to a soft recall whereby affected owners who complained were offered a free repair. Most affected models have now passed their minimum design life, so there's no longer an issue of "premature" failure and all but a tiny handful of models are no longer being repaired for free.
Any kind of investment in your model will therefore be an especially risky strategy unless you know for a fact that your camera was rectified.
