It could be either a defective thermocoupler (which would look like the tip is corroded and shortened) or the thermal switch kit may have dirty electrical connection at one or all of the spade clips (pull each clip and clean with an abrasive like sand paper then replace the clips making sure they are tight. If the pilot still won't stay lit, the thermal switch may have gone bad. Jump it out to verify.
