I try to plug apple TV to my Bose sytem lifestyle 20. The apple TV is plugged by hdmi on my TV (hdmi2). The apple tv image is good but the sound is coming from my tv not from my bose system. i decided to plug the optical cable from apple tv to bose system. It worked from time to time. Sometimes, the sound was coming from the bose speakers...but it does not happened all the time!

You might want to try connecting the Apple TV to your TV using HDMI, then using the optical cable from your TV to your Bose system. In your TV's settings, there should be an Audio Output option. You'll want to turn off the TV speakers. Optical audio can be a little strange compared to traditional analog. If your cord is going bad, it could result in behavior like you described.
