In task manager click on "new task" and then type "explorer.exe" into the dialogue box. If everything boots up then its somhow been removed from your startup process, most likly a virus.
Type "msconfig" into the run dialogue box (start>run) [start menu search in vista] and check your startup options.
To manually re-add explorer to the startup follow these instuctions carefully.
Type regedit into the run dialogue box (start>run) [start menu search in vista] navigate the folders on the left to Winlogon
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SOFTWARE/MICROSOFT/WINDOWS NT/CURRENT VERSION/WinLogon look for Shell double click it and in the value data box delete whats there and put this: explorer.exe
