I was given this Rival Seal-a-Meal VS 107 without an instruction book. Need to learn how to make bags from a roll, where to get rolls, what is the accessory port for and does it make any difference which side of the plastic roll faces up. THanks
The manual is available as a pdf here: http://www.sealameal.com/Product.aspx?pid=1249 . The link is at the bottom left of the page (direct URL: http://www.sealameal.com/manuals/MANUALS/VS107_43_26445081.PDF I'm not sure if the direct link will work.)
You can get bags and rolls at some stores (Ace Hardware often has them or will order them) or from the following site: http://www.sealameal.com/products/ . Other shops (like Walmart and hunting supply shops) may have the rolls as well.
1) To make a bag from the roll, pull the desired length of bag material (plus 3 inches) and cut the bag material with scissors. Cut in a straight line. Plug in the power cord and put one end of the bag between the Sealing strip and the lower gasket. Do not put the open end in the drip tray. Press down on the lid with both hands until the hands free light illuminates. Then take your hands off the unit. The unit will provide vacuum and then seal the end of the bag. When the motor stops and the Sealing Indicator light goes out, press Open/Cancel. Take out your custom sized bag and fill it, leave 3" of space at the top.
Then seal as you normally would. Place the open end of the bag in the drip tray. Close the lid and press down until the hands-free light illuminates. Then wait until the sealing light goes out. Press Open/Cancel, lift the lid and remove the bag.
2) the accessory port is for attaching the accessory hose between the seal-a-meal and special vacuum containers. There is an adapter that the hose connects to and gets attached to the port on the seal-a-meal (see the sealameal products site above) Fill a container with items to be vacuum packed. Connect everything together with the Seal-a-Meal plugged in and press down on the lid with two hands. When the hands-free light comes on, take your hands off the Seal-a-Meal and wait for the unit to finish and turn off.
3) The bags are the same on both sides as far as I know. So either side can be up.
> Often the ready light never goes on or takes over a minutes. How long should it take? Also, > sometimes the seal is incomplete. I think this unit is faulty.
I know with one of our units this happened fairly often. Make sure the bag is properly seated at the drip edge and the sealing strip. If the bag is wrinkled or the edge is not properly placed on the sealing strip, it can be a problem. Moisture in the bag can do it too. (We replaced ours with a better unit after 10 years.)

I hope this helps.
