I was told too loosen the belt with the ajusting screws at the end of the belt when lubricating. now the belt wont stay in line it was perfect before now it goes off to one side or the other. what do i do

The adjusting screws are the answer.tighten the side where the belt goes .or loosen the other side. if you can do this with it running and it will correct the tracking as you tighten/loosen and you will know when to stop.
