You have a Power on Password. The correct password has to be entered before the laptop will bootup. The password is set to prevent unauthorized access to the laptop. Did you purchase this laptop from someone? If so get the password from them. There is no backdoor password and the password is stored on an EEPROM chip so removing the BIOS battery will not reset the BIOS and remove the password.
You can remove the hard drive and put it into an USB hard drive adapter case and use it as an external USB portable hard drive, provided the hard drive is not password protected.IBM/Lenevo policy is to replace the motherboard. You can basically sell the unit for parts. You can remove the hard drive and put it into an USB hard drive adapter case and use it as an external USB portable hard drive, provided the hard drive is not password protected.
There is no way to reprogram the laptop, yes there is a way.
If you are really desparate and you have some electronic skills and a working computer then, there is a way you can access the EEPROM to read the password. It works as I have fixed a few Thinkpads.
